Panzano’s Celebrity Butcher Dario Cecchini Struts His Stuff

Panzano in Chianti is probably best known for its acclaimed and boisterous butcher, Dario Cecchini.  Travel writer Rick Steeves,  television foodie Anthony Bourdain and countless U-Tube videos have made Dario Cecchini and his Antica Macelleria Cecchini into somewhat of a legend in the sleepy hamlet of Panzano.

I had to see it for myself…

You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see locals and tourists alike jamming the doorway of the tiny machelleria (butcher shop) and hear the pounding bass of AC/DC rocking through the streets!    It’s quite a party — all the time!

Not unusual to find the shop packed with locals and tourists who come just to ample the meats, cheeses and raise a glass to Dario
Not unusual to find Antica Macelleria Cecchini packed with locals and tourists who come just to sample the complimentary cured meats, cheeses and raise a glass to Dario.  The seasonings are amazing!

Dario descends  from a long line of family butchers in Panzano.  The original Antica Macelleria Cecchini was destroyed in the war and was rebuilt on the same site, across the street from his upscale restaurant, Ristorante Solocicci (translates to “Only Meat”).

For a more casual dining experience, try Dario Doc aka McDario’s for a fun, family- style seating venue with a single menu that offers hearty angus burgers and side dishes.  This was one of the best lunches I had in Tuscany!  Totally OK to bring your own wine, as I did!  (Dievole’s 2009 Rinascimento IGT Sangiovese blend).  www.dariocecchini.com

Sounds delicious! Can’t wait to visit this restaurant when I go back! (The spices you brought home were amazing!)
