Driving down the bucolic country back roads of Edna Valley several years ago, I was lucky to discover the hidden jewel, Kynsi Winery. And, wow, what a treasure! Totally charming and renovated, Kynsi Winery was once a working dairy farm in the 1940’s. Today, it’s a forerunner in superb Pinot Noirs with a laid-back atmosphere with a fun, friendly and knowledgeable staff.
The signature barn owl logo for Kynsi Winery is actually a named after a Finnish word for “talon”.
The resident nesting barn owls that call Kynsi Winery home are instrumental in keeping the rodent population at bay, capturing up to 40 gophers nightly.
Owners Don and Gwen Othman have been in the wine industry business for over 30 years and used to be known for their hearty Zinfandels. Today, their focus has switched to Pinot Noir, and frankly, I think their Pinot Noirs are the best in the Central Coast wine country!
Wine Enthusiast consistently awards Kynsi Winery‘s Pinot Noir collection with 91 points or more. I highly recommend starting your tasting with the 2010 Pinot Blanc Bien Nacido Vineyard or the 2010 Chardonnay Clone 76.
Next, sip, swirl and taste the fabulous Pinot Noirs ~ the 2009 Pinot Noir Stone Corral Vineyard Estate or the 2009 Pinot Noir Edna Valley, and finish your tasting with the heavenly 2008 Syrah Kalanna Edna Valley. No matter what your palette is, you’re sure to have a great experience at Kynsi Winery! www.kynsi.com
