Call me a creature of habit. But whenever I visit Los Olivos, I make my way first to the delightful and unpretentious Koehler Winery on the beautiful Foxen Canyon Trail. There’s something endearing about Koehler Winery–perhaps its the peacefulness that you feel as you cross the one-lane bridge over the creek through the vineyards upon approach…
Or, perhaps it’s the baby emus that eagerly greet you at the split rail fence–a first time I’ve ever seen baby emus!
Or, maybe it’s the quaint tasting room which resembles an old farmhouse with lazy cats on the veranda… Or maybe it’s the hearty welcome from Dan Zurleine, fondly called “Dan The Man” who runs the show and Koehler Winery‘s wine club.
Or, maybe, it’s the diversity of the amazing wines offered on the tasting menu! Yes–that’s it! “Dan The Man” will artfully guide you through your tasting and keep you amused as well (he could work nights as a standup comedian!)
Of particular note on the lighter tasting side is the 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, the 2010 Viognier, the 2010 Dry Riesling and the 2010 Grenache.
For those red wine lovers, you’ll have plenty of selection! The 2009 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills is excellent, as is the 2009 Accomplice (Syrah and Grenache blend) and the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is outstanding! Go all out and finish your wine tasting on a high note with the 2009 Syrah, one of the best Syrahs in the area.
All the wines at Koehler Winery are very reasonably priced so it’s easy to take several bottles along for a picnic lunch along the stunning Foxen Canyon Wine Trail. The wine club is worthwhile also, as wine club members are first to receive the latest releases and the wine tastings are complimentary! www.koehlerwinery.com
